OSL Minutes: Reference Working Group, February 24, 2009

Meeting came to order at 2:23 pm at the OSL offices.  Those in attendance:
Julie Holden (PAW), Ann Poulos (PRO), Beth Johnson (CRA), Diane Swindlehurst (EPL), Laurie Burke (BAR) , Nina Wright (WES), Linda Caisse (NKI), Susan Dunn (WAR), Mary Anne Quinn (WAR), Lisa Davis (OSL), Pat LaRose (NPT), Barbara Bussart (WNS)

The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

WAR, CRA, NPT  All had employment help sessions - good response.  More people interested in computer workshops.

Featured lists up and running.  They can be sorted however we like, but patron cannot resort them.  Can they be sorted by reverse date?  If not, please sort them by title. To add titles to the lists, highlight the list desired, click on the "add" button and add the title (preferred method is by record number).  Then click on the "use bib" button.  Dedupe and resort the list. There are two copies of the list, one locked and one unlocked.  Add to the unlocked list.  Let Lisa know if you've added to the list - she will update the locked list.  Add reference titles only if other libraries have circulating copies.

EBSCO Career database is up and running through June 30.  Awkward format - bulleted items in center of screen are NOT radio buttons - you must use the menu on the left side of screen.

Jared at EBSCO called while we were in meeting asking did we want Image Quickview feature available for our databases - Searches for images within database, rather than text.  It is JUST an image finder - can turn delimiter off and redo search for text.  This is similar to the GOOGLE image search, but gives the sources.  We will try it on the OSL page for a few months.

EBSCO results default is by date. Julie reported better results with relevancy search.  Lisa will change all libraries to relevance, and post a message on OSL.  If they wish, it can be changed back.

ENCORE/RESEARCH PRO - the new server is installed.  We're getting close to launch.

Notes from recent Steering and membership committee mtgs - OSL is switching to COX from VERIZON.

PINS - Lisa reports stories of many occasions of people using someone else's card and requesting and checking out multiple items from libraries that do not know them.  These items are not being returned.  Lisa has suggested reconsidering the use of PINs, would be required to request items, check holds, etc.  They would also be required for self-checkout.  Problems:  self-checkout stations do not have keyboards, how would PINs be entered. Also many many ref staff use OPAC with patrons to place holds, we would have to ask for patrons' PINS or switch to Millen client to place all holds.

Telecirc - not going away, just migrating from telephone calls to emails.

Demo day at Warwick Thurs. April 2, 9 - ? WAR - tech information, potential new add-ons for Millennium, etc.

ASKRI - ending  Subscriptions expire the end of June.  Our committee is only looking at items for OSL money, not OLIS money. [Pat learned at subsequent mtg. of database review comm. that ASKRI pricing was reduced due to existing contracts with OSL, HELIN.  The ASKRI renewal price still may depend on whether or not OSL continues with EBSCO as their vendor.]

The database review comm. Is seeking feedback on what subjects we should concentrate on with the databases. There is an email in the OSL mail from Laura Marlane with a link to a short survey.  Ref staff at OSL libraries are encouraged to complete the one question survey and there is also an email with links to check out the Gale and EBSCO databases available.

PROJO - only has the local (PROJO) writers, and no obituaries after March 2008.  We should continue to subscribe, but push for a lower price.

With the remaining time, the committee took a look at the database links and began comparing and reviewing databases.

The next meeting will be on March 24, 2:15 pm at OSL offices.

Meeting ended at 3:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara J. Bussart (WNS)
