OSL Minutes: Reference Working Group,September 12, 2007

Warwick Public Library, 2:15 p.m. Those in attendance:  Barbara Bussart (WNS), Pat LaRose (NPT), Lisa Davis (OSL), Mary Anne Quinn (WAR), Linda Caisse (NKI), Susan Dunn (WAR), Beth Johnson (CRA), Hope Houston (DSL), Julie Holden (PAW)

Meeting came to order at 2:20 p.m.

Pat gave a brief synopsis of her meeting with the Local Holds committee, ending with their probable recommendation of a 3-month local holds only on new fiction and DVDs.  This generated a good deal of discussion about what this committee feels should be done, with no real concensus.

Reference Round Table will be held Sept. 19 at Cranston, 10:00 a.m.  Beth will provide refreshments, Barbara will bring a case of water.

Pat and Hope will moderate, with the rest of the committee acting as plants to help the discussion along and to bring up particular points that we would like discussed.

Pat had a list of possible discussion points, as well as an Idea tree that we can hang and add to as the discussion warrants.  Hope suggested that we use one sheet for each "limb" of the idea tree, and add to each one.  Possibly break into small groups and have each group take an idea.  Small groups might encourage the quieter attendees to participate more than they might otherwise do.

Several people have taken or are taking informal surveys of resources used to answer reference questions.  Beth used hash marks for type of resource (Internet, reference or circulating), Sue kept track of the titles used, and Julie kept track of the bar codes of items used, with her supervisor creating a subjects used list.  These results should be given before the small group break out.

Hope has created a link to a bibliography of the articles handed out last meeting.  It would be questionable as to whether we could legally post the actual article.  We should ask if anyone has had a chance to read any of these articles and have a short discussion about them.

We would like to dedicate this round table to Frank Iacono.

1) Introductions - committee and moderators.  If people wish to say something, we'll ask that they introduce themselves and their libraries at that time.
2) Survey results and discussions - Beth/Julie/Sue
3) Articles -
        a) some things are better in print rather than electronic (i.e. atlases, statistical abstract, etc.)
4) Idea tree
5) Small group break out
6) Regroup and discuss ideas
7) Ask people what they might be doing in their libraries
8)
Wrap up.

Julie got a letter from Rick telling her that the software issue is briefly tabled while the OSL offices get moved - he doesn't know what kind of equipment he will have so he doesn't know what software can be supported.  We will get back to this issue when he has more information.

Possible reference round table topic - alternate titles for standard reference sources.

Next meeting : Tuesday, Oct. 23   2:15 p.m.  Warwick Public Library
Meeting adjourned at 3:35 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara J. Bussart (WNS)
