OSL Minutes: LIT Committee, July 22, 2010

In attendance:  Chris Jeffers (PAW), Ray Hetherington (GVL), Celeste Dyer (CUM), Rick Payette (OSL), Georgene Luttmann (COV/LIN), Evan Barta (NKI), Mike Barrette (JOH), Deborah Homer (JAM), Bonnie Cottle (TIV), Ken Corsetti (OSL), Lisa Davis (OSL), Renée Borden (OSL), Sue Rousseau (POR)

1. Call to order at 9:30 a.m.

2. Move to approve minutes of May 13, 2010. Debra Homer moved to approve. Chris Jeffers seconded. Motion passed.

3. Ken talked about reconfiguring Internet traffic through RINET.  The bandwidth has been increased for all libraries and when RINET is not using it, such as now, we get it all.  Soon they will be configuring Internet only traffic to go from us straight to the Internet instead of through OSL and RINET.  Millennium traffic will go straight to OSL. This will speed us up even more.  The new routers and switches will also help. There may be some downtime when these are installed. Filtering and packet shaping will move to RINET, but we will still manage it.  To speed things up even more, Ken has locked out bits traffic between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.  He can make an exception if you let him know.

4. Rick talked about a wake on LAN issue with some of the 780's.  Even if you turn it on in the BIOS it won't work if the "low power mode" is selected.

5. The images Rick is making do not include the Symantec firewall.

6. Rick mentioned that Windows 7 gets its drivers through windows update so he has been adding drivers to the WSUS server. He already has the Epson drivers and some Deskjets. If there is one you need, let him know.

7. Rick has updated many of the images including ones for older PCs that do not include licensed software.  This would be useful to wipe a drive before it is sold or given away.  He also has customized sysprep files to use in customizing Windows 7 images.  He can show us how to do it one on one and will also do a demo at the next LIT committee meeting.

8. Lisa talked about the recent Champlin PCs and how OSL is using them as a match to the BTOP grant.  These PCs must be for the public and cannot be used for staff, even the circ desk.  Lisa will have labels for each of these PCs with their serial numbers.  They must be used for the public for "their useful life".  The BTOP grant PCs will be ordered the first quarter of next year.  The grant also includes routers, switches, mobile labs and two multi-lingual trainers for two years.  The mobile labs will be ordered in the fourth quarter of this year.

9. Deep Freeze 7 works just like 6.62.  You don't need to install the core.  It is used if you have multiple Faronics products.

10. Rick and Ken are looking at 802.11n routers.  They can be configured for dual channels so that faster laptops can take advantage of the faster speeds and slower laptops won't drag the others down.  Check with Rick before purchasing a new router.

11. Meeting adjourned at 11:07 a.m.
