OSL Minutes: E-Zone Committee meeting, January 25, 2010

In attendance:  Christie Getches (SKI), Lil Ricci (WAR), Renée Borden, Chris Jeffers (PAW), Paul Holliday (CRA), Barbara Neiri (NPR), Ray Hetherington (GVL), Celeste Dyer (CUM), Rick Payette (OSL), Georgene Luttmann (COV/LIN), Evan Barta (NKI), Mike Barrette (JOH), Deborah Homer (JAM), Joan Gillespie (OSL)
1. Call to order at 9:30 a.m.
2. Move to approve minutes of January 7, 2010. Christie Getches voted to approve. Chris Jeffers seconded. Motion passed.
3. There was a discussion of patrons using library wifi printing using Envisionware print stations.  Chris Jeffers has started a trial at PAW and will let us know how it is going.  So far tests look good.  Rick said that for most libraries the 10.95 subnet is gone and this software might open up a hole.
4. Meeting topic was creating a bootable USB hard drive in order to ghost Windows 7 PCs.  Windows 7 ghost images are far too large for DVDs and our best bet is to use an external hard drive.  Rick created a hand out with the steps to make the drive bootable in DOS and demonstrated it.  The drive can then be used to copy an image to a machine or to create an image from a machine.  Ray said he has successfully copied the images from the DVDs Rick has previously created to his hard drive.  Rick will put a copy of the files on the FTP site.  Anyone who wants to purchase a Western Digital 320 GB hard drive through Rick should send him an email. Rick will not be making Windows 7 images until the new PCs and laptops are ready to be ordered so that the images will be up to date.  He will work out a method of getting the images on individual hard drives then.
5. Other topic: create an autorun file that places an icon next to your external hard drive or flash drive in My Computer.  Make the file read only.  This will not only give you an idea of which drive you are working with, but if the icon does NOT appear you will know that the drive has been compromised.
6. There was a discussion of Envisionware issues.  Rick said not to ghost a drive that had PC Reservation installed; it would create problems.  PCs with LPT1 are fine to ghost.  Christie and Barbara both had problems with PCs with Envisionware spontaneously rebooting or shutting down.
7. Several people mentioned that laser printers should not be plugged into APC battery backups.  The power drain was too much.
8. Georgene set up the next several meetings:
        a. Thursday, May 13th @ JAM
        b. Thursday, July 22nd @ OSL
        c. Thursday, September 23rd @ OSL
        d. Wednesday, November 17 @ OSL
9.   Meeting adjourned at 11:17 a.m.
