OSL Minutes: LIT Committe, January 7, 2010

In attendance: Mike Barrette (JOH), Evan Barta (NKI), Paul Holliday (CRA), Deborah Homer (JAM), Christine Jeffers (PAW), Georgene Luttmann (COV/LIN), Susan Moreland (NKI) and Rick Payette (OSL).

1. Call to order - Georgene called the meeting to order at 9:45am.
2. Approval of the November 12, 2009 minutes - Susan Moreland made a motion to accept the previous minutes and Deborah seconded. Motion passed.
3. Chair-Elect - Georgene reported that Celeste Dwyer from Cumberland has agreed to be the committee's chair-elect.
4. Gems from Rick -
a. Rick did a trial ghosting at Pawtucket of six new GX780s. Chris said all went very well and quickly. The image is very big and won't fit on a DVD. Group discussed different image deployment options. Purchasing external hard drives that would be bootable and be able hold several images was considered the best way to go. A few members volunteered to test out this process with Rick.
b. Windows 7 - The Windows 7 ghost image has 3 default profiles of xadmin, staff and patron. If you create new users (on a domain for example) they will get the preconfigured user settings also. Word 2007 is installed and the program defaults to saving as an Office 2003 file for compatibility.
c. Champlin Timing - the ordering of the Champlin-funded computer equipment will be different this year. Phase one purchasing will include peripherals (barcode scanners, printers, etc.). Phase two will be servers. Phase three will be the desktops and laptops.
d. Rick mentioned that Symantec Ghost 11.0.2 is needed to create ghost images. He is considering Windows 7 deployment tools since it must be used to create the sysprep file for ghosting. Group expressed interest in learning this new process from Rick possibly in the fall.
e. OSL is still waiting to hear about the federal stimulus grant funds.
f. Rick will plan to show the group at the next meeting in March how to make an external hard drive bootable, how to load ghost images on it and how to pick the right image to ghost off of the drive.

5. Envisionware print release freezing - Mike said his Envisionware Print Release Station computer keeps freezing. Group began discussing CBAs and the increasing problems & frustration with the coin machines. Many feel that Envisionware does not give good support on the CBAs.  Group wondered if Steering could be approached for a solution that may include a service contract with onsite service for those libraries with CBAs?
6. Office 2010 beta version - Georgene gave a brief demonstration of a beta version of Office 2010.
7. Other - Georgene passed out an example of a customized reserve shelf slip from Warwick. Deborah encouraged those who wanted changes on their slips to contact her or Renee.

Meeting was adjourned at 12:00pm.
Next meeting is scheduled for March 4, 2010 at OSL offices in Warwick.
