LIT Committee Minutes: Thursday, November 12th, 2009 9:30am at the OSL offices
Attendance: Chaichin Chen(OLIS), Deborah Homer(Jam), Rick Payette(OSL), Paul Holiday(CRA), Christine Jeffers(PAW), Evan Barta(NKI), Renée Borden(OSL), Susan Moreland(NKI), Laura Marlane(PCL), Mike Barrette(JOH), Christine Getches(SKI), Sharon Fredette(WAR), Lisa Davis(OSL), Georgene Luttmann(COV)
Call to order - Susan Moreland called the meeting to order at 9:37 am.
Minutes of the September 3rd, 2009 meeting - Chris made a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting. Deb seconded the motion. Motion passed and minutes passed.
Jewels from Rick:
Champlin library requests have not been confirmed yet. Rick hopes to place orders as early as December until early February.
OSL has also asked for stimulus funds which are currently pending. The majority of the funds (if granted) will go toward upgrading routers at libraries. Our current equipment is at capacity and cannot handle any more bandwidth should more bandwidth become available. If OSL receives stimulus funds, there will be money for computers for individual libraries. OSL still needs to determine how they will be purchased and distributed if the funds are granted, perhaps a certain number of computers per library or an assessment of each library's need.
New computers will use the latest operating system, Windows 7. Windows 7 does not require additional hardware above Vista to run. The newest Optiplex are the 780s. Rick is not completely happy with the netbooks offered by Dell as they do not have one in the business line. The warranties are much better in the business lines. He is considering the "Thin & Lights" which is a little heavier.
Rick discussed the possibility that he will not be able to provide an image on DVD for the new operating system due to the large size of the image. If DVD image is not possible, he may visit each library where an image could be saved on a server or other computer at the library. There will not be an XP image for the new computers.
Meeting Schedule:
January 7th, 2010 - NKI
March 4th, 2010 - OSL
May 13th, 2010 - JAM
IE8:
General discussion of the new browser upgrade of Microsoft's to IE8. IE8 is starting to be automatically installed.
Specific Issues:
* A message about disabling an add-on. If you read the message, it refers to Sonic. You can disable with no harm.
* InPrivate allows cookies but erases after the browser closes. Sharon said you can enable in Group policies.
Google Wave by Mike Barrette:
Mike gave us a demo with his friend, who was also online. The "wave" consisted of the conversation in real time. Mike invited a number of us to join Google wave and the group will see about how to incorporate it into the LIT group.
Other:
Sharon would like to see text messaging as another means to communicate with patrons. Something like "Mosio." Many of our younger patrons prefer this method of communication.
Sharon also asked about courtesy messages (for example an ability to give warnings on upcoming due dates). Renée thinks the next version of Millennium has the courtesy messages but they would only be by email. Library Elf does this but they are not accepting new libraries for free.
Sharon showed us how to text from a Gmail account.
Meeting adjourned 11:46.
