OSL Minutes: LIT Committee Minutes, November 13, 2008

I.                   Call to order- Susan Moreland called the meeting to order at 9:35am.

II.                Approval of the September 4, 2008 minutes – Deborah made a motion to accept the minutes. Georgene seconded the motion. Motion passed.

III.             Scheduling upcoming meetings - The following meetings were scheduled:

January 8, 2009 at North Kingstown Free Library

March 5, 2009 at Cumberland Public Library

May 14, 2009 at Lincoln Public Library

IV.             LIT Committee Administration – Susan proposed that the committee have a Chair-Elect who would be responsible for taking the committee minutes and running the meeting if the chair is absent. The Chair-Elect would automatically become Chair in 2010. Georgene volunteered for the new position.

V.                Rick

a.      Installing/Configuring Symantec Endpoint Protection – Rick gave a demonstration of installing and configuring an unmanaged version of Symantec Endpoint Protection. New client features include: new name, new interface, rootkit detection and removal, a firewall and protection for zero-day attacks. Rick instructed the group to create two new firewall rules after installing, if the PC is running Deep Freeze. One rule for protocol TCP 7725 and the other for protocol UDP on port 7725. If you are running Symantec Console from a server, Rick recommends a new install and not a migration.

b.      WSUS Project – Rick asked the group how they were doing on pointing computers to the WSUS server at OSL. Georgene mentioned that she has done this via Group Policies. She has posted instructions on the LIT forum.

c.       Mike noted that if you want to use the WSUS server and Deep Freeze thawed on staff machines, the staff machine has to boot frozen first before going into maintenance mode.

VI.             Other

a.      Susan mentioned that a recent Windows update caused Microsoft Office 2003 to stop working on several of her public computers. If anyone experiences the same problem, they can contact her for help in fixing it.

b.      Miguel reported that he has two 745s that randomly reboot. Group offered different reasons for this. Rick suggests simply re-ghosting before spending too much time on troubleshooting.

c.       Deborah asked if anyone else had a problem with Intelligence mice and Office 2007. Melanie said Lincoln had a similar problem. It was suggested that a newer driver may need to be installed.

d.      Lisa informed the group that Chaichin had a variety of MP3 players for checkout by libraries. Promotional materials for Overdrive have been improved. Rick will create a link on the support site for the newer versions. Lisa suggested more promotion of the LIT group by posting a n invitation to attend meetings on the OSL board and reminding people about using the LIT Forum.

e.       Rick mentioned that the OSL server that houses the LIT forum is near death. The forum could die with it. He suggested the group look at new ways to communicate. Chris suggested that the group consider a product that would work for all of the other committees and working groups too. This will be the next meeting topic. Discussion should continue on the LIT board.

VII.          Adjournment – the meeting was adjourned at 11:10am.
