Jamestown Philomenian Library.
In attendance: Mike Barrette (JOH), Chaichin Chen (OLIS), Lisa Davis (OSL), Celeste Dyer (CUM), Prue Fallon (TIV), Christie Getches (SKI), Joan Gillespie (OSL), Ray Hetherington (GVL), Paul Holiday (CRA), Deborah Homer (JAM), Christine Jeffers (PAW), Susan Moreland (NKI), Deby Nunes (WAR), Jill Payette (PRO), Rick Payette (OSL)
I. Call to order- Susan Moreland called the meeting to order at 9:45am.
II. Approval of the June 26, 2008 minutes - Christie made a motion to accept the minutes. Celeste seconded the motion. Motion passed.
III. Rick
a. WSUS server update - Rick has set up a server to centrally run Windows updates and has tested it in some OSL libraries. He handed out a sheet with instructions on how to set it up through Deep Freeze. Let him know if you decide to do it. You can start any time. There are other ways to point a PC to the WSUS server through Local Policies with a batch file, a registry edit with a batch file, with Deep Freeze thawed on staff machines and through Group Policies. Since many in the group were interested in the registry edit, Rick will post that info on the LIT forum.
b. Christine asked if audio streaming was an issue with bandwidth. Rick said that surprisingly it was not. It is the video streaming which is a bandwidth issue as well as other web 2.0 functions. Joan mentioned that OSL is looking into ways to increase the bandwidth.
IV. Mixed Bag
a. Mike brought a Dell 520 that keeps rebooting and has horizontal lines on the screen. Deb said she solved a problem like this by replacing the blue hard drive cable. Paul suggested trying another hard drive in the PC or putting that hard drive in another 520 to see if the problem follows.
b. Christie asked about Campus Manager. She said patrons laptops needed to be rebooted before they could connect to the Internet. Rick said it shouldn't work that way. The logging on to the wireless network should be seamless for the patron and he would mention it to Ken.
c. Paul brought weird error messages that he had gotten in PWB. Some members suggested putting 'JavaScript' or 'java' in the allowed URLs file in the PWB folder.
d. Rick mentioned that Web Pac PRO was loaded today as a necessary prerequisite to the Encore installation.
e. Paper jams were discussed. One library solves phantom paper jams by storing their paper in air-tight plastic containers and buying heavier-weight HP paper. The group also discussed HP versus Dell printers.
V. Other
a. Chaichin reported that OLIS will be using some of its Gates grant money to buy different models of portable players that would work with Overdrive. The idea is for libraries to borrow them to get used to using different models in order to assist patrons.
b. Lisa announced that there will be an Overdrive workshop on October 8th. She will post additional information on the mail board.
c. Mike mentioned that he found a cool software program that allows you to virtually share a mouse and keyboard between two computers. It is called Synergy.
VI. Refreshments for next meeting - Susan asked for volunteers to bring refreshment items to the next meeting at the OSL offices. The meeting will be on November 13th at 9:30am where Rick will conduct a demo on installing/configuring Symantec Endpoint Protection.
VII. Adjournment - the meeting was adjourned at 11:45am.
