OSL Minutes: E-Zone Committee, August 25, 2009

The meeting was held at the Cranston Public Library (Central) and was called to order at 10 a.m.

Those present were:  Mary Ellen Hardiman (NPR), Lisa Davis (OSL), Ed Garcia (CRA), Mattie Gustafson (NPT), Deborah Rock (WAR), Julie Holden (PAW), Beth Johnson (CRA), Becky Boragine and Chris La Roux (GVL).

DIGITAL BOOKMOBILE PR

Lisa Davis and Ed Garcia talked about the Overdrive Digital Bookmobile coming to the Cranston Public Library on September 21 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Tables will be set up near the bus for other activities that could act as a draw to get people to come to the bus.  Ideas included arts and crafts, games, bands, and author signings.  Libraries need to solicit people for the tables and should coordinate with Ed Garcia.

Helium balloons would draw attention to the bus.  Everyone was asked to bring five balloons.

Ed is contacting newspapers and radio stations and handed out a press release.  He asked for help getting articles in local newspapers.  He said local dignitaries and the governor were being invited.

Someone suggested inviting those who have made title suggestions via the E-Zone website.  Ed and Lisa suggested putting a link to the Digital Bookmobile website on each library's website.

OSL is planning to raffle off an iPod and Sony Reader.  A plea was made for other items to be raffled off.  Mary Ellen Hardiman offered to contact Borders and Julie Holden offered to contact BBC audio for donations.

Ed suggested that libraries put information about the event on their web calendars.

Lisa said she would e-mail the link to publicity graphics to all the public libraries, so they could make their own posters or personalize the one that Ed made.

Becky Boragine and Chris La Roux offered to make color posters for libraries that don't have color copiers or printers that can do ledger size.

Another suggestion for outreach was to contact Friends groups and book clubs.

Mary Ellen offered to check the E-Zone database for Rhode Island Book Award titles.  Lincoln and Newport offered to purchase missing titles.

Mattie agreed to post the event on the websites of ABC, NBC, and CBS networks.  Ed would post with the Providence Journal online, and Julie will post on the website for the Center for the Book.

LIBRARY ORDERING

Lisa reported that people are signing up for the E-Zone ordering class, which indicates that some libraries may be ordering for the first time.

Mattie suggested that we needed a selection committee to review gaps in series and keep an oversight on ordering in general.  The Content Reserve ordering interface is not forgiving.  If a title is not spelled exactly the way it is in the database, it won't come up.  A selection committee could assist with librarians with ordering problems.  A selection subcommittee was established with Deb Rock, Mattie, and Mary Ellen as the first members.

MP3 PLAYERS OWNED BY OLIS

Some libraries have ordered them from OLIS for staff to practice on.  We need to keep informing people that they are available, before the technology gets too old to use.

OVERDRIVE SUGGESTED TITLES

Discussion ensued about how best to coordinate order requests from users.  A suggestion was made that it would be helpful if users giving suggestions for title purchases could also denote the format of the material requested.  Lisa will look into this.  We also questioned whether someone should reply to the sender.  After much discussion it was decided that the new selection subcommittee would be ideal for handling the user requests.  Julie joined this subcommittee and they are going to invite Susan LaPore to review children's requests.

CONSIDER INCREASING THE NUMBER OF TITLES USERS CAN BORROW AND RESERVE

After discussing the issue it was determined that we not increase the number of titles one can borrow until more content is purchased.

EPUB FORMAT

Mary Ellen made a plea for EPUB format materials.  The Sony Reader supports this format.  To make this format available requires that the E-Zone website be updated by Overdrive.

Mary Ellen also requested that e-books have their own list on the E-Zone website.

It was decided to remove "Worth a Look" and replace it with E-Books, and to have the website formatted by Overdrive to allow members to purchase EPUB titles.

CARTS

More ordering carts will be created before the OSL quarterly meeting in September.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 3, at the OSL office in Warwick at 10 a.m.

The meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Christopher La Roux
