1. Removing the RI, RJ symbols from OCLC holdings: If your library still has its symbol in OCLC records, let Lisa know if you want it removed. Providence does not want their symbol removed, but most other libraries do.
2. DBM policies: OSL cataloging policies were updated last November and were presented at the last Steering Committee Meeting. Steering approved the policies and they will now be voted on at the next general meeting. Patience posted the updated policies on the message board.
3. MARC records from outside sources: Some libraries have started using or are considering using Title Source III from Baker and Taylor. With this service, Baker and Taylor provides brief MARC records, and these libraries want to be able to have these brief records loaded into the OSL database. Patience plans to evaluate a sample of these records from OCLC. Some of the issues with B&T records that will affect the OSL database are reprints, open records, classic editions, etc. Patience would ideally like to have a staging server set up to make the evaluation possible. There was a great deal of discussion about the quality of these records from Baker and Taylor. Lisa suggested that a subcommittee be formed that could study this issue. This subcommittee will begin meeting in early March.
4. LC subject heading Cookery: The Library of Congress will be modernizing the subject headings for cooking and cookbooks. The term cookery will disappear for the most part. The OSL catalogers will do global changes on the appropriate headings once the Library of Congress makes this official and Patience will notify catalogers at that time.
5. Periodicals: Remember to call for cataloging when your library adds a new periodical title. Also, if your library is the last to delete holdings from a bib record, let the OSL catalogers know.
6. 333's and 666's: As a reminder, some libraries use 666's in the catcode for their on order records. Feel free to update these catcodes with the appropriate date and your library's 3-letter symbol when you run across them and you have that specific item in hand. The OSL catalogers use a catcode of 333's to let a library know that they have searched OCLC for that item but couldn't find a match. They will also make suggestions of what access points would help them do a more successful search. A catcode with 777's can be used for items in high demand. These get priority treatment from the OSL catalogers.
7. Duplicate bib records: Catalogers should search the OSL database carefully to avoid duplicate records. Monographic serials, such as travel guides, should be added to the open record. Any merging of titles which results with a bib record with no holdings should be reported to the OSL catalogers.
8. Stats: OSL cataloging statistics were distributed.
9. Other: Patience said to check the message board for more MARC workshops.
Next meeting: May 3rd at 9:30 a.m., tentatively at Barrington.
