Attendance: Doug Swiszcz (BAR); Ulla Virks (CHA); Brenda Fecteau (COV); Paul Holliday, Linda Gill (CRA); Celina Auclair (CUM); Debra Tirrell (EPL); Mike Barrette (JOH); Melanie Ruggieri (LIN); Sue Connor (MID); Susan Moreland (NKI); Izabella Casselman (NPT); Pam Glen (NSH); Paul Arsenault (PAW); Doug Hinman (PRO); Karen Light (WES); Patience Terrizzi, Lesya Kreshchuk, Reva Rao (OSL)
1. Mike Barrette gave a very informative demonstration on how he has created and maintained a shelflist by using Millennium's Create List and Microsoft Access. Mike also demonstrated how he prints labels. Melanie suggested that Mike's instructions and template be posted on the OSL Cataloging website. Additionally, Mike has said that he is willing to provide advice and help for any libraries who would like to set up a shelflist.
2. Patience asked for suggestions for classic edition candidates. Lists can be emailed to Patience.
3. Control "g" functionality has been lost for the present time. Peter is looking into this problem.
4. Reva has been doing a lot of authority work in Millennium. Catalogers who discover authority conflicts can email the information to the OSL catalogers. Patience said that an authority workshop can be offered to interested libraries in the near future.
5. When adding a numbered series entry to an existing series, remember to conform to the numbering pattern that is already in place. If you are adding a new series which is not already in Millennium, the agreed-upon form should be the name of the series and just the number: Cataloging fun ; 1. If you notice a series with many inconsistencies, such as vol., no., # and the number, feel free to notify the OSL catalogers.
6. Melanie did a demo on how to check Overdrive statistics. If you don't have a password and username, contact Lisa Davis. Some discussion followed concerning whether Overdrive will create Ipod-compatible recordings.
7. Patience briefly discussed the OSL cataloging statistics.
Miscellaneous: The copy record function is once again working.
Patience said that catalogers should feel free to contact the OSL catalogers directly with small problems, like errors on bib records, records that need to be merged, and authority conflicts, etc. instead of posting these kind of issues on the OSL message board.
Don't forget to attach items to open bib records when appropriate. For example, Fodor's USA 2009 should be attached to the Fodor's USA record that already exists in Millennium with the year added to the volume field of the holdings; a new call for cataloging should NOT be done.
As already mentioned on the message board, on October 1st, OSL catalogers will be deleting bib records that don't have holdings attached. Overdrive and periodical records will be excluded from this housekeeping. When calling for cataloging, always add a place holder to the holdings of your record.
Blu-ray discs do not have a separate GMD. The OSL staff is putting "Blu-ray version" in the edition field of the bib record. These discs won't work in a DVD player.
Many catalogers mentioned their frustration with the slowness of Millennium especially in the afternoons. Catalogers should email Ken Corsetti when their Millennium connection is very slow.
Next meeting: Tentatively Nov. 17th at 9:30 in Lincoln
